Welcome to Roots Man Ways

Roots Man Ways began with a love of nature, traditional knowledge, and the belief that there is a lot we can learn by getting back to our roots.

Today, it's also about the life we've built together here in Saint Lucia — growing our own food, learning from the land, living more naturally, sharing our island with others, and finding a little more freedom along the way.

Meet Sammy

Born and raised on the beautiful island of Saint Lucia, Sammy grew up learning that many of the things his family needed could be found right outside their door.

When he and his younger sister were sick, his mother often turned first to plants growing in the garden, preparing traditional teas and remedies from knowledge that had been passed down through generations.

That early connection to plants and traditional herbal practices stayed with him.

Over the years, Sammy has continued learning about the plants that grow throughout Saint Lucia while putting that knowledge into practice through herbalism, gardening, landscaping, growing food, and everyday life on our homestead.

He's also spent years sharing the island he loves with visitors — including plenty of places you won't necessarily find on a standard resort tour.

And I'm Dawn

My path to Saint Lucia looked quite a bit different.

I was born and raised in the United States and eventually made the decision to build a life abroad. What began as a major life change became exactly that — a life, not an extended vacation.

I've learned firsthand what it takes to move to another country, navigate the practical realities, adjust expectations, build a home and create a life that looks very different from the one I left behind.

Today, Saint Lucia is home.

And while Sammy brings a lifetime of local knowledge and connection to the land, I bring the perspective of someone who chose this life from the outside and figured out how to make it work.

The Life We've Built

Together, we've created our own little Caribbean homestead.

We grow food and medicinal plants. We've planted fruit trees. We raise animals. We rely heavily on solar power. We make things, fix things, experiment, learn from our mistakes and continue finding ways to live a little more naturally and independently.

It isn't a perfectly curated version of island life.

It's simply our life.

And that's what we want Roots Man Ways to share.
